What’s an RSS Feed?
RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication.
Chances are pretty good that you’ve seen some of these icons around the internet. What they indicate is content that you can subscribe to for free. This content can come in the form of text, audio and video. You can subscribe to any of this content using Feed Reader applications, or your favorite home pages like Google, Yahoo, and Netvibes.There is an enormous selection of feed readers available, each with different features. Some will only read text based feeds. These are usually called News Readers. Others, like iTunes or Juice, will download and play audio and video files. These are typically called PodCatchers.
Why is RSS good?
As an end user, RSS allows you to subscribe to a large amount of content online without having your email in-box flooded with mail. You don’t have to remember to check each of the web sites you are interested in on an individual basis. You just check your Feed Reader and all of your subscriptions appear in one place. This enables you to review a lot of information quickly.
As a content creator or publisher, RSS automates the process of notifying subscribers whenever there is new content available. This is done in a completely unobtrusive way. Your audience gets their Feed Readers updated automatically with your new content. This automation cuts out certain steps involved in getting content out to your audience using other methods like email newsletters and waiting for them to visit your site.
